Mike Jones named the next men's basketball coach at ODU

Mike Jones, an assistant coach at Maryland this past year, played for the Monarchs from 1991-1995.

NORFOLK, Va. — It didn't take Old Dominion men's basketball long to find a replacement for recently retired Jeff Jones.

A familiar face now returns to where it all started for him in the form of former ODU Monarchs guard Mike Jones.

Jones -- who had been an assistant coach at the University of Maryland -- was officially introduced in a press conference on Friday morning.

Jones was a part of the great Monarch teams under Jeff Capel from 1991-1995 and was named All-CAA second team as a senior. He scored 19 points when then 14th-seeded Old Dominion knocked of #3 Villanova in an 89-81 triple overtime thriller in the NCAA tournament in 1995.

Jones went into coaching and took over for the legendary Morgan Wooten as his alma mater DeMatha High School in Washington DC.

He'd later be an assistant coach at Virginia Tech for two years and then recently with the Terrapins.
