I-64 showdown between the Tribe and Pirates could be an intriguing one

Going into their 10th meeting in which William & Mary has won the previous nine, both the Tribe and Pirates are 1-2 respectively in the CAA in team rushing.

Whether it's on a computer screen or a sheet of paper, it doesn't appear the football matchup between Hampton and William & Mary (3-1) won't be much of a showdown. In nine previous meetings, the Tribe has won all nine games including last season's 31-10 win at Armstrong Stadium. The 2024 edition might be different.

Both squads are very similar in terms of their run game and the numbers back it up. The Tribe (243.5 yds/game) and Pirates (208 yds/game) are 1-2 in team rushing this season in the Coastal Athletic Association.

Tribe head coach Mike London, a peninsula native, loves that both programs are in such close proximity to each other as they meet Saturday at 6pm from Zable Stadium. It'll be each school's conference opener.

"It's good for college football. It's good for both fan bases", he said. "It's good for that stretch of I-64 that connects us together. It's good for our conference".

As for the Hampton Pirates (3-1), they've gotten off to an impressive start under interim head coach Trent Boykin. They've captured three straight wins that included back to back victories over archrivals Norfolk State (37-7) and Howard (27-20).

Hampton is looking to change the outcome against William & Mary. This 10th meeting for them hits a nerve.

"This game is personal", says running back Ja'Quan Snipes who had two second half touchdowns in their win over the Bison on Saturday. "Last year we came in lights out playing well with them. It was 10-10 in the third quarter. Having ups and downs in the third and fourth quarter".

Pirates defensive back, Xavier Marshall added, "We're definitely bringing that animosity from last year. On top of everything you know what's going on this year".

Boykin said, "As you game plan, where's your small edge going to be", he added. "You're kind of identical on both sides of the ball".

The Pirates are hoping the 10th try is a charm.
