Hampton University athletics is in a better place than it was a little over a month ago. Director of Athletics Anthony Henderson spoke via phone on Wednesday afternoon. He spoke about how his department is making progress as they corrected eligibility question marks that kept fall student/athletes in various sports like football, volleyball, women's soccer and cross country.
Henderson did speak on the subject of an assistant athletic director for compliance Alexis Avery and verified she is no longer with the school. He also couldn't comment on why she's no longer there, because it's a personnel issue, but did note she played a big part in finding the eligibility problems.
"She wasn't here when all of the issues I guess occurred when I hired her as our assistant AD for compliance back in April", he said. "We connected and she came in and like I said she was the one that kind of uncovered the issues that we're fixing."
With the fall/student athletes picture now settled, Henderson says they're now turning their attention to spring sports to make sure everything is correct and in compliance.
"We just have to make sure that none of our student/athletes that have questions have issues", he said. "It's going back and building everybody's profile to make sure that we go through everybody with a fine tooth comb so they don't have any issues."
Henderson has hit the ground running since he started at his alma mater back in February. His background coming in was fundraising and external, but says "I've spent way more time on internal processes than in my entire career".
The Hampton Pirate football team has homecoming this Saturday when they face North Carolina A&T at 2pm.
