CNU men begin defense of their national title as the NCAA Division III tournament gets underway

The Captains (21-6) will start on the road against Hobart College on Friday from upstate New York.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Christopher Newport men's basketball team got the ultimate prize last season claiming the program's first ever national title. On Wednesday the team headed out of town to upstate New York. The Captains (21-6) face Hobart College on Friday at 5:10pm. They feel slightly different than a year ago.

"Now is definitely better", says senior guard and Norfolk native Jahn Hines. "We're getting the culture back that's gone through CNU a lot and coming in when you've got 8 or 9 freshmen and a lot that's playing. They're kind of riding the high that we're on."

His younger brother Collin, a sophomore guard had a differently view adding, "I thought it was going to be smooth sailing", he said. "The pressure, you know, you feel it. That was kind of one of the things I didn't expect".

As their title banner hangs from the rafters hangs in the Freeman Center, the Captains use the sight of it as fuel.

"It's been done", says head coach John Krikorian. "Nobody should ever worry about can we do it. Nobody should ever not believe we can do it. Its been done and there are many guys on our team that were apart of making that happen".
