Indian River High school graduate Alonzo Mourning is getting the word out to all men about their health and specifically prostate cancer. The 54 year old told ESPN he had his prostate removed back in March after a Stage 3 diagnosis. The procedure has left him cancer-free.
Mourning, the director of player program and development for the Miami Heat since his retirement back in 2008, was a seven-time All-Star, an NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist in 15 seasons with the Charlotte Hornets, Heat and New Jersey Nets.
He missed the entire 2002-03 season with a kidney disease and underwent a kidney transplant in 2003.
He finished his career with 14,311 points, averaging 17.5 with 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 838 games. Mourning was the No. 2 overall pick in the 1992 NBA Draft out of Georgetown and became a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer among men in the United States.
