HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University Director of Athletics Anthony D. Henderson Sr. introduced new women's basketball coach Tamisha Augustin to the media and public earlier today. Augustin, a native of Hampton is returning to her roots. She was greeted warmly by a sizable audience inside the Convocation Center that included many people who watched Augustin grow up in the community, play basketball at Bethel High School and later lead the Bethel team as Head Coach. In her opening remarks, she outlined her vision for the Hampton women's basketball program on the court and in the classroom and made clear expectations for her student-athletes and staff.
Henderson Sr. reflected on the job search and outlined the characteristics the program needed in its next head coach. During the process, Henderson Sr. and his staff were looking for a coach who has ties to the local community, respects the lineage of the women's basketball program, is highly organized through a preparation plan, and thinks creatively and innovatively. Once again, the hunt for Hampton's new coach did not take the traditional route. Henderson Sr. felt with his background in athletics, the support of the president, and having personnel that him and his staff could lean on made the utilization of a search firm deemed unnecessary.
When asked about the new hire Henderson Sr. stated, "It was a thorough process and Tamisha checked every box that we were looking for. I knew the character of the individual through previous relationships. Through her expansive career, we know Tamisha can develop all-conference student-athletes and recruit at a high level."
The press conference also featured remarks form Darrell K. Williams, President of Hampton University who said, "Today we are striking another harmonious chord in alignment of goal six of our strategic plan, to sustain athletic excellence. I am very pleased to welcome Tamisha Augustin back to Hampton, Virginia and most importantly to her new home by the sea."
Augustin, who becomes the 10th head women's basketball coach at Hampton University is excited to be coming home. The Hampton, Va. native, exclaimed, "Returning to my hometown to lead these ladies is a dream come true. I am honored and excited to have this opportunity to contribute to Hampton University Athletics' rich tradition and mentor these student-athletes."
