NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Council for the City of Newport News, Virginia, wishes to honor and recognize the accomplishments of Allen E. Iverson, a former player in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
City Council would like to recognize Mr. Iverson’s significant ties to the City of Newport News during his formative years with the honorary naming of a portion of 16th Street, from Wickham Avenue to Walnut Avenue, as Allen Iverson Way.
In support of this recognition, a commemorative street sign would be installed designating the portion of 16th Street as Allen Iverson Way.
Allen Iverson is regarded as one of the greatest scorers, ball handlers, and shooting guards in the history of the NBA, Mr. Iverson earned several accolades, including NBA Rookie of the Year (1997), 11-time NBA All-Star, MVP in 2001, and Hall of Fame induction in 2016.
He was also chosen for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021, honoring the "75 Greatest Players in NBA History.”
