Yorktown residents want to put a stop to cars that zoom by their homes and kids playing in the yard.

YORKTOWN - York County residents have had it with cars that don't obey the speed limit, especially in residential areas, where many kids play outside.

Margaret Lorenzino says she's seen too many accidents right in front of her home, off of Allens Mill Rd. in Yorktown, Va.

"There was a boy speeding down this road. He must have been flying because he hit that sign – see the neighbor picked it up. And he hit a tree, then he hit the tree in the next yard," she said.

She never lets her great grandkids play in the yard, saying it's just too dangerous.

"I think it's ridiculous. It's not even safe to go out and get your mail. You can't walk on this road," she said.

Residents say Hornsbyville Rd. and Wolf Trap Rd. are also big problem areas – a breeding ground for speeders.

"In the middle of the night they're flying down the road. I've seen people going probably 50-55 down that road," Jodi Ward said.

"Believe we've had about two fatalities on Wolf Trap. I mean there's no sense in putting up these 25mph speed limits if they're not gonna be enforced," Lockhart said.

Another resident told 13News Now he and his wife are considering selling their home. With cars whizzing past their house, and flying by their kids playing in the yard, the risk is too great.

Residents are demanding officials to do something to force people to slow down.

"I made a complaint with the Board of Supervisors in York County about my concern. They put out one of the little signs that shows your speed, but that really doesn't do much good," Lockhart said.

"I think they should lower the speed limit or make a dead end street here," Lorenzino said.

"I just want to tell people, please be careful out there, because it's a dangerous road --a very dangerous road," Ward said.

13News Now contacted the York County Sheriff's Office about the issue. They said they will send officers to the area to run radar. The vice chairman of the Board of Supervisors for York County says he will look into the issue.
