VDOT urges travelers to be safe driving during the solar eclipse

The Virginia Department of Transportation reminds travelers to be safe and keep their eyes on the road during the solar eclipse.

RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is reminding motorists to be safe and keep their eyes on the road during the April 8 solar eclipse.

Those in Virginia who are positioned will see a partial solar eclipse as the moon blocks part of the sun.

VDOT reminds drivers planning to see the eclipse to pick a safe location to view the solar eclipse and to carefully exit their vehicles after doing so. The department asks people to not pull over and park on the shoulders or ramps to view or photograph the solar eclipse.

Also, people should not wear their solar eclipse glasses while driving. Those not viewing the eclipse should expect reduced visibility and are encouraged to turn on their headlights.

VDOT said there will likely be congestion along highways as the sky darkens and even afterward when people return to the roads.
