NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- A woman is dead and her husband is injured after a shooting outside of Naval Station Norfolk Monday evening.
Norfolk Police arrived near Admiral Taussig Blvd. and Hammond Avenue for a motor vehicle accident around 7 p.m.
While police were on the scene, 25-year-old India Nelson pulled out a gun and shot her husband. Officers then returned fire.
Nelson was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was injured, but has been released from the hospital, a Navy spokesperson confirms.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya, the spokesperson for Virginia State Police, says prior to the crash Nelson and her husband were fighting.
Virginia State Police are leading the investigation.
Anaya did not say how many times Nelson was shot or if she aimed at the officer before the fatal shooting.
13News Now's Steven Graves spoke with an eyewitness to the aftermath of the shooting who described how officers were acting on scene.
"They looked in control of the situation completely," said the witness, who did not want to be identified."It didn't seem like a hectic situation when I was by there, police seemed to respond quickly and professionally."
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
