WILLIAMSBURG (AP) -- The College of William and Mary is considering increasing its freshman class this fall to boost revenue.

Provost Mike Halleran has been talking to faculty members about increasing the upcoming freshman class by 50 students to help alleviate the Williamsburg school's budget shortfall.

He says that while the university is slated to receive stimulus money in fiscal year 2011, its base budget still will be down millions. After providing financial aid, enrolling 1,450 students instead of 1,400 would bring in an additional $500,000.

Some faculty members are concerned about the effect on class sizes, housing and other facilities. This year, the university has about 5,800 undergraduates.

The board of visitors would have to approve any increase to the student body's size.
