NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — The City of Newport News released information on how to properly dispose of a sandbag after a storm.

If a sandbag is unused and dry, residents can reuse it for future for flood prevention, or use in flower gardens. The empty bags should be discarded in the trash.

According to officials, unused sandbags should NOT be used in sandboxes, disposed of in schoolyards, and disposed of on any beaches.

If a sandbag was in contact with flood waters, residents should not dispose of it in a trash can.

The City of Newport News has three sandbag drop off locations:

  • Public Works Operations: 511 Oyster Point Rd., Anytime Sept. 17 to Oct. 1
