HAMPTON (AP) -- Hampton's city council has chosen a new mayor.
The council tapped Vice Mayor George Wallace on Friday to replace Molly Ward.
Ward resigned to take a job at the White House leading engagement with mayors, county and municipal officials nationwide.
Wallace is a former Hampton city manager who was first elected to the council in 2008. He's also served as assistant city manager, executive director of the Southeast Tidewater Area Manpower Planning Authority in Norfolk and deputy director of Human Affairs in Newport News.
Wallace will serve as mayor on an interim basis until the next election, which is in May. Whoever wins that election will serve until 2016.
Ward is an attorney who had served as the city's mayor for five years.
