Man shot, killed by Virginia Beach officer after threatening police with knife

The man, identified as 57-year-old Jeffrey D. Tyree, was shot by a Virginia Beach officer after approaching another officer "in a threatening manner" with a knife.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Police shot and killed a man after he approached another officer in what police described as "a threatening manner" with a knife on February 9, officials said.

Virginia Beach police said in a news release that officers responded to a "domestic" situation in the 5700 block of Paiute Road around 11:01 a.m.

Police said the man, later identified as 57-year-old Jeffrey D. Tyree, had a large knife and attempted to harm himself. It took officers hours to negotiate but the man eventually put down the knife.

When officers tried to "engage" the man, he grabbed the knife and approached "one officer in a threatening manner," police said.

This caused a second officer to fire once at him. After he was hit, police immediately began first aid.

Tyree was taken a local hospital with serious injuries. Police reported a few hours later that he had subsequently died.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and the scene is still active.

The department's Internal Affairs, Homicide Unit and the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney are investigating the incident.
