VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- A 23-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 13 years, for the murder for a 20-year-old man.
Jordan Diangelo Champion, from Virginia Beach, was sentenced for First Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm, and Conspiracy.
Champion plead guilty in April 2016 of the 2013 death of Kristopher Lee.
Virginia Beach police found Lee suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after responding to calls of shots fired in the Level Green neighborhood of the city.
An investigation revealed that Lee had received a phone call from his girlfriend and had gone to meet her at the location he was shot. Champion and another man, Dau-Shawn Newton, had a close relationship with the victim's girlfriend and were identified as suspects in the murder.
Witness told Police that they saw Newton talking on a phone near the murder scene right before the crime occurred. Newton was seen directing a station wagon, driven by a third man towards the scene. As the vehicle parked, Newton get into it. Gunshots were then heard in the area.
Champion told police that he discarded the gun and his jacket before getting into the station wagon and fleeing the scene with Newton and the third man.
Police recovered the gun and Champion's jacket in October of 2013.
Dau-Shawn Newton pled guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Murder and received a sentence of 6 years and 5 months in prison.
