NORFOLK, Va. — Political ads continue to dominate the airways as we get closer to the November election. You might be familiar with one ad approved by Congresswoman Jen Kiggans that features a catchy phrase: "That's Jen Kiggans!"
The ad says Kiggans supports border security, veterans’ healthcare, and wants to lower inflation.
“You know what, it’s time for someone in Congress who’s serious about securing the border. Hey - that’s Jen Kiggans! And will stand up for veteran’s healthcare. That’s Jen Kiggans."
The ad continues: “Someone to take on Biden’s inflation and bring down costs for Virginia’s families? Or support law enforcement? That’s Jen Kiggans.”
Let’s verify Kiggans record on this, using these sources:
Kiggans and border security
In March, Kiggans co-sponsored the “Defending Borders, Defending Democracies Act” which suspended entry of some migrants at the border.
In May 2023 Kiggans also voted in favor of the “Border Reinforcement Act” which imposed limits on asylum eligibility and required the Department of Homeland Security to continue building a wall along the US-Mexico border.
She also visited the Mexico-US border in February of last year, where she spoke out against illegal drug trafficking across the border. In the ad, video from that visit is displayed on a television screen.
So yes, Kiggans supports heighten border security measures.
Kiggans and her record on veterans' healthcare
What about veterans' healthcare? In June, Kiggans voted in favor of the “Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act” which included funding for VA health care programs and benefits.
In 2023, Kiggans also introduced the bipartisan “Caregiver Outreach and Program Enhancement Act” which gives veteran caregivers mental health support. In the ad, a man is reading a newspaper headline referencing this bills.
Kiggans has also been vocal about concerns at VA Medical centers.
So yes, Kiggans does have a record supporting veterans’ healthcare.
Efforts to curb inflation
When it comes to inflation, it’s important to note the Federal Reserve recently cut interest rates for the first time in four years and has indicated it could lower interest rates again before the end of the year. Inflation is coming down and experts say the economy is in good shape.
Meanwhile, Kiggans has supported legislation providing tax relief for families. She voted in favor of the “Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act” which would rescind IRS funding... something Republicans say would protect middle-class Americans, but Democrats argue would allow higher-income Americans to dodge taxes.
Kiggans has also supported the “Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024”, bipartisan legislation that enhanced the child tax credit and increased the low-income housing tax credit.
And yes, Kiggans has also been vocal in her support for police departments, having helped secure funding for first responders through the "Consolidated Appropriations Act 2024" and having met with different Virginia police departments during her term in office including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Isle of Wight.
