VERIFY: Don Davis' claim on struggling families

A new ad by Democratic Congressman Don Davis (NC-01) claims many families are "barely making it" financially.

NORFOLK, Va. — 13News Now is working to Verify campaign ads you’re seeing on television, including the latest one paid for and approved by Congressman Don Davis in North Carolina.

“Today many families are barely making it… I’m Don Davis, I know what it’s like to struggle.”

Let’s start by verifying that simple claim:

Are “many families” indeed just “barely making it” these days?

Our sources are:

Here are the facts. Inflation is slowing but some costs like rent and car insurance are rising. It’s getting more expensive to eat out, too. A study from Bankrate found that 34% of American workers feel like they are living paycheck to paycheck.

Yes, the stock market is at a near-record high, but researchers point out there’s often a disconnect between the market economy and the real economy.

And because finances are deeply personal and unique to each household, we can verify yes, “many families are barely making it.”

This is true.

And, what’s Congressman Davis doing about it?

In the ad, Davis states, "...and now in Congress, where every day I try to lighten the load for our hard-working families."

This particular ad is vague on policy. So more information is needed to answer what specific action he’s taken to improve the economy these last two years in office.

But if you look at the priorities section of his campaign website, the very top issue is: “rebuilding our rural economy.”
