Drivers on I-64 in Hampton last week did exactly what not to do during severe weather

FEMA and the National Weather Service both agreed that overpasses are not safe places to seek shelter during severe weather.

HAMPTON, Va. — Friday's thunderstorms brought headaches across Hampton Roads, especially for drivers commuting during the downpour of rain and hail.

The Virginia Department of Transportation's cameras showed many drivers on Interstate 64 decided to protect themselves by taking cover under overpasses, but doing so could put you in even more danger.

FEMA and the National Weather Service both agree that overpasses are not safe places to seek shelter during severe weather.

It actually puts you at a greater risk of being hit by flying debris.
