VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Beach cyclists are demanding safety improvements in the city.
Drivers hit two cyclists recently on Shore Drive. Both drivers left the victims on the side of the road.
One of the victims is 33-year-old Monika Glandorff. She was hit in the 1000 block of Shore Drive on Saturday, June 4.
Glandorff suffered several broken bones and crushed vertebrae in her back. Glandorff says she's s thankful she survived and isn't paralyzed.
'I know I could have easily gotten killed,' said Glandorff. 'He could have killed a human being. Not having a sliver of compassion to stop and make sure that person isn't dying- that makes me angry,' she added.
Police say Glandorff's bike was equipped with nighttime riding gear. They are looking for a dark colored 300 series BMW believed to be between the model years of 1998 and 2000. The car should have damage to the right front turn signal and is missing the passenger side mirror.
Tuesday night, outraged cyclists will ride to city council.
After two close calls, they say they're speaking up before a cyclist gets killed.
In April, Virginia Beach released its Bikeways and Trails Plan, with a goal of making the city 'bike friendly' by 2017.
Some of the projects include developing more bike paths, widening roads and painting bike lanes.
However, the money hasn't been set aside.
Right now, cyclists just want to create awareness that the city has a bike plan.
Jim Dunham, one of the cyclists recently hit on Shore Drive, will ask council to put out public service announcements about making Virginia Beach bike friendly.
'Also, we want to know how the cycling community can help achieve this goal,' Dunham said.
Dunham is still recovering after a driver hit him and fled the scene. He's out of the hospital but in a wheelchair with broken bones.
