United Way Virginia Beach Tragedy Fund surpasses $3 million

Two weeks after the deadly shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, memorials continue to grow and so does financial support for victims and families.

NORFOLK, Va. — Two weeks after the deadly shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center, memorials continue to grow and so does financial support for victims and families.

United Way of South Hampton Roads has collected more than $3 million in donations.

"We jumped right in and said we would help," said Kenny Burchard, Vice President of Resource Development for United Way. "Corporations, organizations, individuals and our community has raised over three million dollars for this fund."

Burchard said some of these donors are close to the tragedy and that's what has motivated them to give.

"We're really just trying to let the community know that the city needs us to stand behind them," he said.

Standing behind not just the city, but those whose names won't soon be forgotten.

Responding to a request for clarification from Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA-02) in the wake of the mass shooting, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has confirmed that payments are not considered taxable income for recipients.
