Tim Kaine celebrates after defeating Stewart, Waters in U.S. Senate race

The results are in, and Democrat Tim Kaine will remain a U.S. Senator representing Virginia.

The results are in, and Democrat Tim Kaine will remain a U.S. Senator.

On Tuesday, the incumbent defeated his competitors Republican Corey Stewart and Libertarian Matt Waters.

ELECTION RESULTS

The victory was widely expected as Kaine enjoyed large leads in most public polls and had a huge cash advantage.

Stewart is a conservative provocateur best known for his outspoken support of Confederate imagery and hard-line views on immigration. He struggled to raise money and was ignored by national GOP groups.

Kaine was Hillary Clinton’s running mate during the 2016 Presidential Election. After the loss, Kaine told 13News Now his role in the Senate was even more important because of the Democratic minority.

A little about Kaine: he first was elected into politics in 1994 after working as a lawyer in Richmond for 17 years. His first political gig was a city council member. Four years later, he became the mayor of Richmond.

In 2006, Kaine was sworn in as Virginia’s 70th Governor. He was then elected into the Senate in 2012.

During the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats are hopeful they can win four U.S. House seats currently held by Republicans.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
