NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Dara the pregnant Bornean Orangutan at the Virginia Zoo had an ultrasound on Wednesday.
On April 11, the Zoo announced the 18-year-old orangutan was pregnant. The baby is expected sometime in mid-June or early July.
Zookeepers and Dr. Colleen Clabbers conducted the ultrasound on Dara and determined the baby orangutan is healthy.
According to the zoo, staff was able to perform the ultrasound by using food as a positive reinforcement.
The Virginia Zoo released this video, updating guests about Dara.
Zoo Keepers observed Dara and 14-year-old male Solaris breeding last fall.
