SUFFOLK -- Attempt to murder a police officer is among a series of new charges placed against a man accused of assaulting a Suffolk police officer, officials told WVEC.com.
Police say 43-year-old Joe Staton beat Officer James Winslow with a blunt object on Saturday morning. According to investigators, Staton was in a stolen car and ran into the woods when Officer Winslow stopped him near Nansemond Parkway and Portsmouth Blvd.
Winslow pursued him, and at some point, Staton allegedly struck him in the face.
Officer Winslow was found unconscious by other officers.
Staton was arrested in the area because residents tipped off police, authorities stated.
Other new charges placed against Staton Tuesday are disarming a police officer, attempt to remove a firearm from law enforcement officer, forgery of a public record, uttering a forged public record and grand larceny.
He previously faced six charges including malicious wounding of a police officer, aggravated malicious wounding and grand larceny.
Staton is in jail and is due in court in July.
Officer Winslow remains in critical condition and is expected to have a long recuperation period.
A fund for his family has been set up at Monarch Bank by the Suffolk Police Officers' Association. To donate, send a check, with Officer Winslow's name in the memo area, or go to:
