PORTSMOUTH -- A fire at a small church in Portsmouth has left parishioners wondering where they'll worship on Sunday.

This was reported to emergency dispatch shortly after 1 p.m. by someone saying they smelled smoke in the 2200 block of Chestnut St., but didn't know the source.

A fire unit was sent to investigate, and while searching the neighborhood, discovered an active fire in a small church called "Fullness of God Ministry," in the 2400 block of Chestnut St. A full commercial fire call was issued and additional units arrived on scene within minutes.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. The damage was contained to the interior and consisted mainly of extensive smoke damage.

According to a department spokesperson, the cause has not yet been determined, but a fire investigator was called to the scene. He said he hoped to have a cause available later Saturday.
