NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Do you have important paperwork you need to shred? On June 16, Newport News Sheriff's Office is offering Shred Day.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Todd Stadium people can bring their sensitive papers to be destroyed for free. Sheriff’s Office personnel will direct drivers to the Stealth Shredding trucks and remove the papers for on-site shredding.

Last year, the event helped ensure over 25,000 pounds were safely destroyed. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Virginia is the 20th in the nation the total number of identity theft reports.

The Newport News Sheriff's Office is offering Shred day to residents only. This offer is not available for businesses.
