NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC)-- Monday night, Senator Tim Kaine will make it official that he's running for re-election.
He's already been elected Mayor, Lieutenant Governor, Governor, Senator, and he ran for vice president.
In the last CNU Wason Center poll on March 5th, the Democrat came out substantially ahead in hypothetical match-ups against each of the leading Republican candidates. He beat state delegate Nick Freitas by 23 percentage points. He also is projected to beat Minister EW Jackson, and former Trump for President Virginia campaign chairman Corey Stewart, by 24 percentage points.
The poll was conducted before retired major general Ben Mizusawa joined the contest.
Christophe Newport University political analyst Quentin Kidd said the race is currently a mis-match in terms of name recognition.
"Right now, the dynamic of our polling reflects the relative unknown nature of the Republican candidates to the relative known nature of Tim Kaine," he said. "But also, baked into that is the reality of Virginia state-wide electoral politics right now as a Democrat is going to have a 5, 6, 7 point advantage from the get-go."
Republican were quick to lash out at Kaine. RNC spokesman Garren Shipley said in a released on Monday, Kaine has become "a partisan attack dog for Hillary Clinton that has fought Republican efforts to create jobs and give Virginians bigger paychecks."
The first candidate campaign finance reports are due to be filed with the Virginia Department of Elections on April 16.
Kidd predicts that Kaine will have no problems financially.
"It wouldn't surprise me if Tim Kaine has raised more money than all of the Republicans, combined," he said.
After Monday's campaign kickoff in Richmond, Kaine will make four stops Tuesday in Hampton Roads.
His stops will be in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Hampton and Newport News.
