Students, families, and teachers volunteered to weed and water the community garden at Seatack Elementary School Wednesday night.
The Gifted Resource teacher at Seatack, Marie Culver, spends her Wednesday nights with students and families, using her passion for a purpose.
"We do it all throughout the summer for the kids to get plants and healthy eating in. And, for the kids to get a good workout in with their families," she said.
That includes families like Oliver Hotalen's, a soon to be sixth grader, who have been around since this community garden was started five years ago.
"You'd be surprised how much this garden intervenes with school work. You can come out here and learn about parts of a plant, parts of a flower," he said.
It's that kind of learning, that Pharrell Williams believed in when he helped Seatack grow the garden right before his "Something in the Water" music festival over the summer.
"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I can't believe I got to meet Pharrell Williams," said Hotalen.
"What Pharrell has done and partnered up with Virginia Natural Gas and Timberland is we've built a dynasty of lifelong learners," said Culver.
The beds they're cultivating and harvesting, Pharrell has helped double the number of them, and, expanded the whole garden.
His presence is now forever planted at Seatack community garden. And, together they'll help grow what a hometown hero left them.
"That's what this is about: giving back to your community," Culver said.
