VIRGINIA BEACH - There have been two coyotes sighting near the campus of Regent University in Va. Beach.
Regent President Dr. Carlos Campo said one report came from someone in a wooded area 'quite some distance from campus.' Another sighting occurred near off-campus university housing, which includes family housing with some small children.
As a precaution, the university sent a notice to the campus community about the sightings.
In a statement to 13News, President Campo stressed, 'We do not believe that there is any imminent danger on campus at this time, and will monitor the situation to ensure the safety of all students, faculty and staff.'
'Coyotes are very common in suburban areas and are probably mostly a danger to small pets left alone outside,' says Aaron Proctor, a Wildlife Biologist with Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
'When attention turns to a coyote sighting in a residential area we see this as an educational opportunity to talk to our children about wildlife,' says Proctor. 'Whether it's a baby bird or a coyote people should never feed or approach wild animals.'
