HAMPTON (AP) -- The Hampton VA Medical Center has increased training for employees after a report faulted its response to a man who was dying of cancer.
The report by the Office of Inspector General at the Department of Veterans Affairs says the hospital missed numerous opportunities to start hospice care for the man, who wasn't identified. He died before he could be admitted to the program.
Following the report, the hospital conducted a two-day training session for doctors and other employees on end-of-life and palliative care issues. Palliative care focuses on improving the quality of life for people with serious illnesses.
The hospital also developed a pocket card identifying conditions when palliative care can be considered.
The Daily Press reported the office's findings Friday.
