PORTSMOUTH -- Tolls have been proposed for drivers going through the Midtown and Downtown tunnel, but there could be some assistance on the way.
The new toll is expected to be nearly $2. But there is a proposal that could lower that by 50 cents.
Don Comer with the Portsmouth Partnership tells 13News that State Senator Louise Lucas is in the midst of a deal with Governor Bob McDonnell that would lower the tolls, in exchange for a vote on the proposed state budget.
Comer was a part of a group that lobbied at the state capitol on Wednesday for a bigger state contribution to the new tunnel project.
'The 500 million dollars that Senator Lucas has requested will bring tolls down by 50 cents,' explained Comer.
Winston Simmons has no choice but to take the tunnel to Norfolk three times a week for work. He would be paying more than $800 each year in tolls.
'That's a lot of money for someone who's struggling today, with gas going up,' commented Simmons.
