PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Portsmouth Police say an assault suspect who barricaded himself inside a home has surrendered peacefully and is now in custody.
SWAT was called to a home in the 2800 block of Bayview Boulevard on Wednesday morning. It was the same address where 43-year-old John Newby allegedly committed two assaults on Tuesday night.
"It's just really scary that it could have happened, you know, something could have happened like that in this neighborhood, to be honest with you," said neighbor Kim Brown.
Newby had warrants for abduction, attempted murder, malicious wounding, assault and battery of a family member, and strangulation.
"Well this side of the neighborhood is generally, normally quiet. So to see all these cops and tape and everything, it's like, "Uhhh... OK," said neighbor Katrina Kelley.
After a barricade situation that lasted several hours, Newby was talked out of the residence and surrendered to police. He is currently being held at the Portsmouth City Jail. No additional charges have been filed.
Police were first called out to the home around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday in response to reports of an assault.
Officers found a woman who told them she was assaulted by a man she had met, who was identified as John Newby.
Officers were called again around 11:05 p.m. to the same address for a fight.
Police found a woman who told them she was assaulted by "someone she knew." She had several minor injuries and was taken by medics to a local hospital.
