Portsmouth extending school times by 10 minutes

School officials say it will not only allow more instruction time, but it'll also make it easier to make up time if class is canceled for bad weather.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Students in Portsmouth can expect to be in the classroom a little longer starting in the fall.

The district is extending the school day by 10 minutes. Leaders say it will not only allow more instruction time, but it'll also make it easier to make up time if class is canceled for bad weather.

New times that go into effect in September:

  • High schools will go from 7:20 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • Middle schools will go from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
  • A elementary schools will go from 8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. (with the exception of Douglass Park, which will go from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.)
  • B elementary schools will go from 9 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
  • Preschools will go from 8:35 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. 
  • The New Directions Center will go from 8 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
