NORFOLK, Va. — Two bills, same issue.
Both House Bill 1211 and Senate Bill 643 remove citizenship status requirements so that undocumented immigrants can get driver's licenses.
The newest measure waiting for Senate approval is SB 643. Senator Jennifer Boysko sponsors this measure. She explained that for the past five years, herself and other colleagues have tried to get this bill heard. She points out that this is the closest they have gotten to getting the bill passed.
"We estimate that there are, even within the undocumented community, close to 300,000 people who would want to take advantage of this," said Boysko.
The bill would create a new driver's license that many would qualify for.

Chris Serrano grew up around the Latino community in Norfolk and believes this measure is needed.
"Because there's always a fear of getting pulled over not having papers and its always a scary feeling...you never know that could be the day you go back to your country," said Serrano.
Boysko cites that even though citizenship status wouldn't matter, there are still eligibility requirements that people have to qualify for in order to get a license.
"The skills test as well as the written test. You would pay the fee, you need to get insurance and it would provide a non-real ID credential rightful drivers license,” said Boysko.
Boysko expressed this will not impact the Real ID ACT.
She anticipates a decision for both the House bill and Senate bill will be determined in the next two weeks.
