Poll: 1 out of 4 voters firm on candidate choice for Virginia Democratic primary

One poll finds that the voters who are likely to participate in the Virginia Democratic primary will vote for Mike Bloomberg, Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden.

VIRGINIA, USA — Results from a new poll show that when Virginians vote in the Democratic primary come March 3, they're throwing their weight behind three specific Democratic candidates.

Monmouth University found that Mike Bloomberg, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden are all the top voter picks for the Democratic presidential primary.

Among Virginia voters likely to participate in the March primary, 22 percent stand with Bloomberg, 22 percent stand with Sanders and 18 percent stand with Biden. Those choices are followed by Pete Buttigieg (11%), Amy Klobuchar (9%) and Elizabeth Warren (5%).

Among the voters who identify as Democrats, 22 percent are behind Sanders, 21 percent are behind Biden and 20% are behind Bloomberg.

For the independents in the Commonwealth as well as a small number of self-identified Republicans, 25 percent stand with Bloomberg and 23 percent stand with Sanders trailed by Biden and Klobuchar who each have 13 percent.

Biden leads among black voters according to the poll, with 37 percent of the black vote. A third of voters under the age of 50 prefer Sanders, while about a third of voters 65 and over back Bloomberg.

Even though these findings show that Bloomberg, Biden and Sanders lead the field among Virginia voters, only 25 percent of voters likely to participate in the primary are firmly set on their candidate choice. Most are open to voting for a different candidate. The results in Iowa and New Hampshire had little effect on how Virginia voters are viewing the race.
