WASHINGTON — The fate of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas remains unclear. There may be a trial in the Senate, or there may not.
By one vote, the Republican-led House of Representatives impeached Mayorkas in February. They accused him of violating the Constitution by refusing to enforce border security laws.
Now, attentions turn to the Senate.
Sen. Mark Warner (D-Virginia) called the charges against the Secretary "phony," and he said the entire exercise is "a charade."
Speaking to Virginia media on Thursday, Warner said: "Even my Republican Senate colleagues have said that they see no evidence that Mayorkas somehow did high crimes and misdemeanors that would warrant an impeachment."
Warner went on to say that the entire episode has been "a huge waste of time."
