WASHINGTON D.C., DC — CORRECTION: This story has been updated to remove any mention of Norfolk City Councilwoman Andria McClellan. A previous version of this story incorrectly referred to her as a member of Congress who voted for Hakeem Jeffries as House speaker.
It's still uncertain who will be the next Speaker of the House after both the Democratic and Republican nominees failed to secure enough votes during a floor vote Tuesday.
Rep. Jim Jordan fell short of the 217 votes required to become speaker, winning just 200 votes. The controversial conservative, who was nominated by New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, is expected to make another attempt to win the speaker's gavel by forcing additional rounds of voting.
Meanwhile, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, who was nominated by Rep. Pete Aguilar, pulled slightly ahead with 212 votes.
When all the votes were counted, several Republicans — including Rep. Jen Kiggans from Hampton Roads — voted for the ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
McCarthy, however, backed the nominee of his own party — voting for Jordan. Rep. Rob Wittman also voted for Jordan.
Democratic Reps. Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) and Bobby Scott (VA-03) were among the majority to vote for Jeffries.
