Richard Ottinger, a Republican, is vying for the 6th District seat.

Richard Ottinger, the Republican candidate for the Virginia State Senate 6th District, will hold two campaign kickoff events on the Eastern Shore on Friday.

Ottinger, a Norfolk business attorney, will be at Rayfield's Pharmacy, 2 Fig St., Cape Charles in Northampton County at 8:45 a.m., and at the Club Car Cafe, 18497 Dunne Ave., Parksley in Accomack County at noon.

His campaign will hold events on Saturday in Norfolk and Mathews County.

Virginia's 6th District includes Accomack and Northampton counties on the Eastern Shore, Mathews County and parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Ottinger is challenging incumbent Democrat Lynwood Lewis in the November 3 election.

Lewis, an Accomac attorney, narrowly won a special election in January 2014 to fill the seat after Ralph Northam vacated it after his election as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

Lewis was first elected in 2003 to represent the Eastern Shore in the House of Delegates.

Ottinger earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Boston University and a law degree from the College of William and Mary.

He also is a 2002 graduate of the Sorenson Institute for Political Leadership at the University of Virginia.

Among awards Ottinger has received are the Virginia State Bar's R. Edwin Burnette Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year award, the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association's Walter E. Hoffman Community Service Award and the Virginia Bar Associations Young Lawyers Division Sandra P. Thompson Award.

He has been named for seven years as one of Virginia's Legal Elite Young Lawyers by Virginia Business magazine, and in 2014 was recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America by his peers.

Ottinger and his wife, Lisa, have two children. They live in the Ghent section of Norfolk and are members of First Presbyterian Church.
