VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — 2024 has been busy so far for election offices in Hampton Roads, and things are ramping up once again as early voting for Virginia's June primaries starts Friday.

One of Virginia's two seats in the Senate, and all 11 House of Representatives seats are on the ballot on Nov. 5, 2024. Primary elections for those seats will be held on June 18.

In Virginia Beach, General Registrar Christine Lewis said her team is prepared to kick off early in-person voting at the elections office on Friday. She says prep normally starts 60 days before the election.

“We bring in a lot of temporary help," Lewis said. "Right now, we have about 31 employees including full-time staff.”

She said the office plans to add more employees for the presidential election this fall.

"We'll be hiring probably an additional 30 to 40 more temporary employees just to be able to get all of the ballots out," she said. "Last presidential [election], we had over a thousand people vote early each day in our little office. It takes a lot of work but we get it done."

Lewis said turnout is normally low for a primary sitting around 10%. She expects the same numbers or more for this election.

“We’re looking at probably around 10% to 20% turnout. Probably closer to 20% because of the permanent absentee voters.”
