NORFOLK, Va. — State-level races across Hampton Roads for the November 2023 General Election will play a key role as Republicans and Democrats battle it out for party control of the Virginia General Assembly.
This year every seat in Virginia’s House of Delegates and Senate is up for election. Currently the Democrats have a razor-thin majority in the Senate, while the Republicans narrowly control the House.
Several elections in our region are particularly competitive and being watched closely as pivotal seats in the struggle over the state's legislature, including Senate districts 17 and 24 and House districts 84, 89 and 97.

There are also local elections for school boards, boards of supervisors, and more in Chesapeake, Newport News, Poquoson and Suffolk, as well as York, Surry, Sussex, Mathews, Southampton, Gloucester, Accomack, Isle of Wight and James City counties, and on the Eastern Shore. Residents in Gloucester County will also vote on a capital improvements bond referendum.

Virginia Election Results for Senate District 24: Monty Mason vs. Danny Diggs
Considered one of the tightest races across the state for this election is Senate District 24, where former York-Poquoson sheriff Danny Diggs is challenging state senator Monty Mason to represent voters in Newport News, York County, Williamsburg, Poquoson and James city County.
Virginia Election Results for Senate District 17: Emily Brewer vs. Clinton Jenkins
Another key race is Senate District 17, where two sitting delegates — Emily Brewer and Clinton Jenkins — are battling it out to represent their hometowns. The district is large, covering Suffolk, Franklin, Emporia, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Brunswick and Greensville, and parts of Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Dinwiddie County.
Virginia Election Results for House District 97: Karen Greenhalgh vs. Michael Feggans
In House District 97, first-term delegate Karen Greenhalgh is being challenged by Air Force veteran Michael Feggans to represent parts of Virginia Beach, including Kempsville, Princess Anne, Larkspur and Pembroke.
Virginia Election Results for Senate District 89: Karen Jenkins vs. Baxter Ennis
In House District 89, Karen Jenkins, a Suffolk native and school board member, is competing against retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel Baxter Ennis to represent parts of Chesapeake and Suffolk.
Virginia Election Results for Senate District 84: Nadarius Clark vs. Mike Dillender
In House District 84, the incumbent candidate, Nadarius Clark, who calls himself a working-class community activist, is being challenged by retired Navy captain Mike Dillender to represent Franklin and parts of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County and Chesapeake.
