Virginia Beach Democrats announce endorsements for mayor, school board seat

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee (VBDC) announced its endorsements for mayor and the District 4 School Board seat on Saturday night.

The committee is backing Sabrina Wooten for mayor and Dr. Alveta Green for the District 4 School Board seat. The endorsements come after a caucus held Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

"These outstanding leaders have demonstrated their commitment to our community and align with the values and vision of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee," the committee wrote in a news release.

According to the VBDC, more than 800 Democratic voters turned out to participate in the caucus. 

Wooten garnered 762 votes over Cheryl Turpin, who earned 57 votes from caucus participants. For the school board seat, Green won 85 votes, compared to 25 votes for Anissa Bowden.

Here are the VBDC-endorsed candidates for the November election:

  • District 1 (City Council): David Hutcheson
  • District 1 (School Board): Kelly Convirs-Fowler
  • District 3 (City Council): Cleon Jones
  • District 4 (School Board): Dr. Alveta Green
  • District 5 (City Council): LG Shaw
  • District 5 (School Board): Melinda Rogers
  • District 7 (City Council): Mabinty Scott
  • District 7 (School Board): Matt Cummings
