NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Eight people, including two incumbents, campaigned to serve on the Newport News City Council.

The City Council is governed by three people each representing one district of the city: the North District, Central District and South District.

North District

In the North District, incumbent Marcellus Harris ran unopposed. Harris told 13News Now before the election that his priorities for Newport News include adding more mental health resources for youth services, expanding business opportunities and bringing an end to gun violence.

Central District

The Central District race saw five candidates battle for one seat.

Rob Coleman has defeated four challengers: Andrea Diggs, Scott Cox, Justin Kennedy and Stephen Ferguson. He garnered 31.4% of the vote, compared to 28.33% for Diggs, 24.27% for Ferguson, 13.74% for Kennedy and 2.26% for Cox.

Coleman, born in South Korea, now calls Newport News his home. He was Vice Mayor in 2016 and served on City Council once before in 2012. He is the CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula.

Coleman previously told 13News Now some of his top priorities for Newport News include ramping up economic development, investing in public safety and increasing education opportunities for schools.

South District

In the South District, incumbent Tina Vick faced challenger Clifton Atkins.

Vick has held on to her seat, defeating Atkins with 68.8% of the vote.

Vick has served on city council for more than a decade already, including time as Vice Mayor. She ran for mayor in 2022, losing to Phillip Jones. She was born and raised in Newport News and, according to the city council website, serving on City Council "continues her desire to implement policy and programs to enhance the lives of all Newport News residents."
