NORFOLK, Va. —
A familiar face is currently in the lead in Norfolk's mayoral race; Kenny Alexander has nearly 60% of the vote as of the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Opposing candidates Giovanni Dolmo and Tommy Leeman tried to unseat Alexander in this year’s election, but currently sit at over 6% and nearly 34% of the vote respectively.
Alexander has held this position since he was first elected as Norfolk's mayor in May 2016. Before he served as mayor, he served in the Virginia Senate from 2012 to 2016 and in the House of Delegates from 2002 to 2012.
“My background, my leadership, my experience, and my vision are the right combination of skillsets to continue to lead Norfolk forward,” said Alexander.
During his campaign, Alexander shared the progress he has made during his time as Mayor, including public safety and the downward trend of crime in the city. Norfolk Police share data that show violent crime dropped 28% in 2023.
Alexander also cited progress on the city's casino project, wherein groundbreaking began just a week before the election, with further construction to continue into 2025.
He says the city is addressing poverty and diversifying the local economy, and he wants to tackle concerns about traffic safety, including maintaining roads impacted by heavy freight and container traffic.
