Leslie Mehta wins Democratic primary of Virginia's 1st District, will challenge Republican Rep. Rob Wittman in November

The primary results prevent a rematch of the 2022 election, where challenger Herb Jones had garnered 43% of the vote against Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman.

NORFOLK, Va. — The Associated Press projects former ACLU attorney Leslie Mehta has won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. House election in Virginia's 1st Congressional District, defeating Army Colonel and 2022 nominee Herb Jones Jr. 

As of 8:30 p.m., Mehta is leading Jones with 65% to 35% of the vote. 63% votes are reported.

The primary results prevent a rematch of the 2022 election, where Jones garnered 43% of the vote against Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman. The district covers parts of Richmond and the Historic Triangle – Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.

   

A first-time candidate for office, Mehta is running on affordable health care for all, and plans to emphasize reproductive rights and an end to youth gun violence.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.
