HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton's mayoral race has Jimmy Gray in the lead with over 70% of the vote in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Challenger Richelle Wallace is hovering around the remaining 30%, but it's important note that as of the publication of this story only 43% of precincts are reporting.
Gray, who is the city's former fire chief and assistant city manager, has also been vice mayor of Hampton since 2018. Before the election, he told 13News Now he wants to continue many of the city's recent strategies.
“I think the next step for me to be able to continue the progress that we made the last several years is for me to step into that role of mayor and lead the city into the future," he said.
Gray ran against Richelle Wallace, a retired fire captain who worked with Hampton Fire for two decades.
Gray has said he wants to support local businesses and build on the city's investments in public safety, and will work to provide more resources to support youth in the community.
