Jennifer Wexton beats Congresswoman Barbara Comstock in Northern Virginia

During much of the race Wexton attempted to paint Comstock as a representative who would not go against President Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON -- A new woman will represent the residents of one of Northern Virginia's fastest growing congressional districts.

Democratic challenger Jennifer Wexton won Virginia's 10th District race against Incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock.

At a Jennifer Wexton watch party, Barbara Comstock called to concede around 8:15 p.m.

FULL ELECTION RESULTS

The Virginia 10th district spans from Winchester to the suburbs of Fairfax County.

Comstock's projected loss is significant for the GOP. The district has been in Republican control for close to 40 years.

During much of the race Wexton attempted to paint Comstock as a representative who would not go against President Donald Trump.

The President is a divisive figure in Northern Virginia. However, Comstock had previously opposed the President's attempts to freeze federal hiring and a federal pay raise increase.

Negative campaign ads dominated the race with Wexton tying Comstock to Trump with the name "Trumpstock" and repeating the fact that the republican voted with the president 98 percent of the time.

Indeed, "The Trump Factor" was alive at the polls, according to many voters who stated that President Trump had an impact on their vote.

Wexton also focused on healthcare and reminded voters that Comstock had voted to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Comstock tried to distance herself from Trump, but failed to hold town meetings to hear from constituents. Her campaign attacked Wexton for high tolls on I-66 urging people to not get "Wextoned."

After Wexton's win, Delelgate John Bell (D) turned that negative into a positive and asked the crowd, "Are you ready to get Wextoned?"

While the rural counties of Clarke and Frederick chose Comstock, the voter-rick counties of Fairfax and Loudoun gave Wexton huge margins. Voters in Loudoun where Wexton lives gave her a huge 18 percent margin.

During a campaign rally on Monday, former President Barack Obama surprised campaign workers with doughnuts in Fairfax County, Va. Obama showed up to encourage volunteers in Fairfax County, as Sen. Tim Kaine and congressional candidate Jennifer Wexton seek victory in Tuesday's election.
