NORFOLK, Va. — North Carolina's 2024 primary elections are Tuesday, when people in the Tar Heel state will pick the candidates they want to face off in the November general election, including presidential primaries across three parties.
Biden's Democratic challenger, Dean Phillips, is not on the ballot in North Carolina, so “No preference” is the only option against Biden in the state's Democratic primary. North Carolina's presidential primaries also include a Libertarian race with 10 candidates.
North Carolina also has a number of other federal, state, and local primaries on the ballot.
There are both Republican and Democratic primaries for the governor’s race, as current Gov. Roy Cooper is term-limited. Other statewide races include Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and several judicial contests.
In Congress, a newly redrawn US House District 1 has a Republican primary, to which the winner will go up against Democratic US Rep. Don Davis.
North Carolina’s state legislature is also up for election in November, and numerous primary races are being held for NC Senate and NC House seats.
Lastly, several North Carolina counties feature primary elections in local government, including local board of commissioner and board of education races.
Below you'll find live election results for high-profile North Carolina races affecting people in the northeast section of the state. Results are updated every 2 minutes or less (some races may update less frequently).

North Carolina Governor Election Results
The race for governor is one of the most expensive and contentious in recent state history. Democrats are hoping to keep the governor’s office blue, following current Gov. Roy Cooper’s exit because of term limits, and Republicans are hoping to take back the governor’s office for the first time since 2016.
On the Republican primary ballot Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is the clear front-runner — but not without controversy. The Army veteran’s harsh comments about the LGBTQ+ community, the role of women in society, and the Holocaust have made him a target of political attack ads. If elected, he would become the first Black governor in North Carolina history.
The Democratic ticket is a more crowded field of candidates. Attorney General Stein is the front-runner. He has raised $11.5 million for his campaign — far and away the most of any candidate on either side of the aisle.
There are also two Libertarian candidates running for North Carolina governor, tech entrepreneur Shannon Bray and businessman Mike Ross.
North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Election Results
The field of candidates for lieutenant governor is wide open in the Tar Heel state. A long list of candidates with a wide range of experience and backgrounds are vying for the mostly ceremonial position. However, the lieutenant governor does preside over the state Senate and serves as a tie-breaking vote on legislation.
The Republican field is crowded with eleven candidates on the ballot. There are three candidates on the Democratic ticket. There is one Libertarian candidate for lieutenant governor. Because she is running uncontested, UNC Chapel Hill graduate Dee Watson automatically advances to the general election.
A Democrat hasn’t won an election for lieutenant governor in North Carolina in more than a decade. In that timeframe, only one member of the GOP had served in the role, and he was appointed by the then-governor in 1974.
North Carolina Attorney General Election Results
For the Democrats, Satana Deberry, Tim Dunn, and Jeff Jackson are competing in the March primary to become the state's next attorney general. There will not be a Republican primary because Congressman Dan Bishop is running unopposed for the party's nomination. That sets up a potential face-off between two U.S. representatives if Jackson wins the Democratic nod.
North Carolina voters have not elected a Republican attorney general in over 100 years.
North Carolina Election Results for U.S. House District 1
After newly drawn maps across the Tar Heel state, voters in Northeastern North Carolina will soon be voting in one of the state's most tightly contested congressional races, with a Republican nomination on the line on Super Tuesday.
The district, covering a sprawling 22 counties, was redrawn to include Currituck and Camden counties after previously aligning with the other Outer Banks localities in District 3 since 2022.
North Carolina's District 1 has been held by a Democrat since the 1880's.
The candidates looking to unseat Rep. Don Davis include a familiar face to the race, Sandy Smith, and a candidate who hopes to re-energize the district, Laurie Buckhout.
