PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Democrat Don Scott has secured his seat in the Virginia General Assembly representing House District 88.

As of 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, Scott was leading the race with 66% of the vote, compared to 33.4% for Republican challenger Jim Wright.

"Tonight, the work begins to protect and defend the rights and freedoms of hardworking Virginia families and make this economy work for everybody," Scott wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Scott, the incumbent candidate, raised over $2,400,000 for his campaign since 2022, while Wright only raised about $2,200.

Scott, a lawyer who currently serves as House Minority Leader, campaigned on the issue of raising the minimum wage. He says he will aim to raise it again.

"So, making sure we have a floor that makes sense, so as we raise the minimum wage from $7.25 so now it's $13,45, I think. And hopefully, if we get the majority again, it will get up to a living wage which is $15," Scott told 13News Now in the days leading up to the election.

The 88th District is largely what used to be the old 80th District, with a piece of the old 79th District. It encompasses about 59,700 registered voters in Portsmouth.

Scott will be sworn in on January 10, when the 2024 session of the Virginia General Assembly convenes.
