NORFOLK, Va. — Virginia Delegate Angelia Williams Graves is the projected winner over Norfolk City Councilwoman Andria McClellan for a Norfolk Senate district.
Unofficial results show Graves with a commanding lead of about 62% to McClellan's 38% in the Democratic primary for Senate District 21.
Graves will likely win the general election on November 7, since the seat is heavily Democratic and there is no Republican opponent in the race.
"I'm grateful to the people," Graves told 13News Now Tuesday night. "They believed in me 13 years ago, and this victory and this win shows they still believe in me. And I'm grateful for that."
Graves has served in the Virginia House of Delegates since January 2021 when she won a special election to replace Del. Joe Lindsey. Prior to that, she served on the Norfolk City Council from 2010 to 2021 and was the city's vice-mayor from 2013 to 2016.
McClellan has been on the Norfolk City Council since 2016, representing Superward 6 which covers a large swath of the city, including Downtown Norfolk, Ghent, Naval Station Norfolk, and Ocean View.
Senate District 21 covers most of Norfolk with the exception of the East Ocean View area and some nearby neighborhoods. The Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) shows that Democratic candidates in various races have repeatedly won more than 70% of the vote.
