CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Republican Baxter Ennis leads the results in Virginia's 89th House District seat with Democrat Karen Jenkins close behind.

As of 9:55 p.m. Tuesday, Ennis is leading the race with 51% of the vote, compared to 49% for Jenkins.

Both candidates fought hard and had a lot of support from fundraisers, both surpassing a million dollars in donations.

Ennis campaigned on his priorities of tax reduction and relief, along with improvements to the education system saying, "Our schools should be best and this district should be the best in the Commonwealth, and the Commonwealth should strive to be the best in the nation."

Ennis, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, said he would continue a life of service by representing House District 89.

Encompassing roughly 64,400 registered voters the district is comprised of parts of the city of Chesapeake and Suffolk. This was the first election since new electoral maps came into effect.
