NORFOLK, Va. — Hours after the collapse of a large bridge in Baltimore, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said on Tuesday morning Virginia is ready to provide help to the neighboring state of Maryland.
Youngkin wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he has been in contact with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and "Virginia stands ready to assist and support our neighbor Maryland."
"Our prayers are with the families affected and the courageous rescue efforts underway following the tragic incident at Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge," Youngkin wrote.
The statement comes as rescue efforts are underway at the bridge as several vehicles fell into the water. The collapse happened after a container ship rammed into the bridge, the Associated Press reports.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) said various federal, state and local agencies are coordinating response efforts.
"The I-695 corridor is a vital connection for people and goods traveling along the East Coast, and we stand ready to offer technical assistance—including Emergency Relief funding—to help manage traffic and rebuild the bridge as quickly and safely as possible," the FHWA said in a statement.
